Sonoma Coast's original kite store opened in 1983 by Roma and Barbara. Their idea was what two things would go together, they came up with Candy & Kites; add in flags, banners, garden spinners and a nice selection of air toys and you have a happy little store that specializes in being nice to you.

After twenty years of running Candy & Kites the ladies were ready for a well earned retirement. Having been a friend of Roma's daughter since they were 12, Fiona received an email asking if we wanted to buy Candy & Kites. Of course we thought she was kidding, as it turned out she wasn't.

David and I thought about it for a couple of days and decided it couldn't hurt to find out more. After all, we had been visiting Candy & Kites for almost 20 years. David spent six months working full time in the store and Fiona worked weekends – just to make sure it was a good fit.

On October 1, 2003 we officially took over Candy & Kites.

David has a background in hotel and restaurant management and computer software. Fiona has been an administrative assistant in hotel sales and related fields.

Both of us love to travel and have been fortunate enough to indulge that passion. Our most recent adventure was a ten month bicycle trip starting in Vancouver, biking down the coast to San Francisco then flying to Australia and New Zealand where we were on the road for eight months. We love seeing all the bicycle tourists loaded up and passing the store, though it sometimes makes us long for the open road.

We love this new chapter in our loves. Living in Bodega Bay and owning Candy & Kites is wonderful. Though the store keeps us busy we do find time to hop on our tandem and take a ride down the coast or take our kayak out in the bay to discover the sea life.
